As we reflect on 2019, it is fair to say that it has been a challenging year with many events taking place locally (in Trinidad and Tobago), in the Latin American and Caribbean region and in the international landscape that drive and impact business development and success. As regards the translation and localisation industry, RMC continues to follow industry trends and developments and achieve additional qualifications in translation and the related technology, which is developing before our very eyes. With artificial intelligence (AI) influencing the ongoing development and use of machine translation (MT) engines, for those who work in post-editing, this technology has resulted in the need for translators to develop a different set of skills, requiring them to understand how MT works and to 'clean up' raw MT output before delivery to the customer.
Not all MT engines are created equally and it is unwise to depend on free MT software available online for professional or confidential documents. Human translators will continue to be invaluable and irreplaceable because they perform highly skilled jobs which should be recognised as such. Translators and interpreters also have a duty to help customers and the general public understand how we can use the tools at our disposal to become better at our jobs — translation tools are unable to replace human translators and interpreters but, when used together effectively, the potential for success exponentially increases. This, of course, like any other profession, takes training and practice and is not for the layman.
