The Start Of The Journey: Part III

Having tested the waters, I took the next step and confirmed this was indeed viable, I registered my business. While still working in my full-time job, I was already working as an intercultural consultant for a US company and thoroughly loved the experience of helping European and North American assignees settle into living and working in T&T. Then I was contacted by another company and started doing intercultural coaching sessions within the Caribbean. Subsequently, I started supporting T&T nationals relocating to other countries abroad and working with intercultural consultants like me in those countries to help assignees and their families successfully adapt to the new living and professional environments.

When I started on my own, I was mainly offering translation services in my main language pair, English to Spanish and Spanish to English, then more languages were added to our service offering over time.

After formalising the business, I then offered interpreting services, first in one language pair and then others. Additional services were then added including event management and supporting industry events for several government ministries negotiating agreements and MOUs in foreign languages. Today we currently provide the following services locally, regionally and internationally:

  • Professional document translation
  • Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting (B2B and other meetings, conferences, workshops, training – numerous topics, court and more.)
  • Intercultural coaching services
  • Language tuition for adults and children (group and private classes online)

For many years we were approached about language classes, but it was not initially under consideration. Finally, we started offering this service about two years ago and we have not looked back.

We now work with multiple languages including: Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

Ten years later, my advice on this entrepreneurial journey is to seek balance. If you love what you do, it is very easy to get caught up and carried away but balance is key – as with anything we do. This is my current journey, balance during growth.

We continue celebrating our 10-year journey by inviting questions from you our audience. Feel free to ask questions in the comments below or via DM or by email to admin@rmclanguages.com.

It is always with gratitude that we are able to continue this journey, gratitude for the support, for our clients for believing in us and gratitude for the experiences and lovely people we meet on this entrepreneurial journey.
